Inconel 718 round steel Manufacturing Process

INCONEL 718 Alloy (UNS N07718/W-Nr. 2.4668) is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant nickel-chromium material for use in temperatures from -423° to 1300°F. Age-harden-able alloys can be easily manufactured, even into complex parts. Its welding properties, especially its resistance to post-weld cracking, are excellent.

1. Raw material selection:

The selection of raw materials is crucial to manufacturing high quality Inconel 718 round bar. Usually, it is necessary to use high-quality alloy materials that comply with relevant standards and specifications. Make sure the raw materials have the correct chemical composition and do not contain excessive impurities. Raw materials from reliable sources are available through qualified suppliers.

2. Processing technology:

The processing technology of Inconel 718 round steel usually includes the following steps:

Melting: The raw materials of the alloy are melted through methods such as vacuum induction melting or vacuum arc melting. During the smelting process, parameters such as temperature, smelting time and smelting atmosphere are strictly controlled to ensure that the composition of the alloy is uniform.

Casting: Molten Inconel 718 alloy is injected into a suitable mold and allowed to solidify through continuous cooling. Commonly used casting methods include vacuum projection, vacuum arc investment casting (VIM-VAR), isothermal heater (DH), directional solidification, etc. The cooling rate and temperature gradient in this step have important effects on the final structure and properties.

Heat treatment: Heat treatment is performed on the cast Inconel 718 round steel, including solution treatment and aging treatment. Solution treatment is usually performed at a temperature of 1100-1200°C, with the purpose of dissolving alloy elements and uniform distribution. Subsequently, the structure is stabilized by aging treatment at lower temperatures to improve strength and toughness.

Hot rolling & cold working: The heat-treated Inconel 718 round bar is deformed through mechanical processing processes such as hot rolling and cold working to adjust its shape and size and further improve its mechanical properties. These processing steps typically include rolling, forging, drawing or extrusion.

3. Quality control:

In order to ensure the quality and performance of Inconel 718 round steel, quality control is very important. Here are some common quality control measures:

Chemical composition analysis: The chemical composition of Inconel 718 round steel is analyzed and tested by using analytical equipment such as spectrometer and mass spectrometer to ensure that it meets the specified requirements.

Detection and testing: Use metallographic microscopes, scanning electron microscopes, hardness testers and other equipment to detect and test micro-structure, grain size, hardness, tensile strength and other properties.

Non-destructive testing: Conventional non-destructive testing methods include ultrasonic testing, radio-graphic testing, and magnetic particle testing, etc., which are used to check whether there are cracks, pores, inclusions, and other defects in Inconel 718 round steel.
